Practical Guide to EU funding opportunities for Research and Innovation
Europe has three broad initiatives for which offer organisations funding and support for research and innovation.
This includes the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme (CIP), Framework Programme Seven (FP7) and Structured Funds (SF).
CIP includes special finance instruments, which offer through intermediaries access to loans and venture capital for SMEs. FP7 now includes the Risk-Sharing Finance Facility managed by the European Investment Bank as well as the Joint Technology Initiatives (JTIs)

FP7 Risk Sharing Finance Facility (RSFF)
The European Commission and the European Investment Bank (EIB) have joined forces to set up the Risk Sharing Finance Facility.
The RSFF cabe used to fund high-risk but crediworthy FP7, JTI and ETP Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) projects
Joint Technology Initiatives (JTIs)
Under FP7, JTIs are legal entities that have been introduced to realise Public-Private Partnerships in research at European level.
Each JTI seeks to release the Strategic Research Agendas of a limited number of European Technology Platforms (ETPs).
There are six JTIs established or in the process of been formed:
- Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI)
- Embedded Computing Systems (ARTEMIS)
- Aeronautics and Air Transport (Clean Sky)
- Nanoelectronics Technologies 2020 (ENIAC)
- Fuel Cells and Hydrogen (FCH)
- Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES)

Eurostars Programme for R&D funding for SMEs
