Green software technology that saves energy and boosts performance of computer systems

Abstract

An SME from Northern Sweden has developed a toolbox containing a set of algorithm reference implementations that can increase the efficiency of an application by a factor up to 100.000 in order to boost computer performance or save large amounts of energy through service consolidation or switch to more energy efficient hardware platforms without sacrificing performance. The company is looking for partners that can join in programming and help in addressing additional applications.

Description

5% of all energy produced in the world is used for running the Internet. Large amounts of energy can be saved by developing new, smarter "green" applications using less resources than existing software. At the same time the performance and efficiency of will increase enormously.

The company has a number of algorithms already patented, develops efficient systems for customer specific applications.

Typical applications inclunde banking systems, large routers, hand-held equipment with limited memory and/or processor capacity.

The company is specialized in developing very fast and efficient algorithms taking hardware platform capabilities and specific requirements (searchability, deterministic behavior, fully indexable compressed data etc.) into account.

Innovative Aspects:
Smarter algorithms will make applications faster and require less memory. This allows products to be based on simpler, cheaper and more energy efficient hardware or dramatically increasing the capabilities and performance of existing products.

The technology is applicable to all software decision processes and performance enhancements by up to 100 000 times or more over less intelligent algorithms have been demonstrated.

As an example, a proof of concept application has been developed allowing 200 million contacts to be stored in a mobile phone. Searching the database can be performed with an average lookup time of 30ms.
